- INSTALLATION OF PAYROLL USA
- ===========================
-
- REVISION 28TH. DECEMBER 1989
- ----------------------------
-
- Version 2.20 has to be released for 28th. December for the 1990
- January taxes. There has not been time to completely revise this
- file for the new programs. The distribution disks do have an
- INSTALL.EXE program that automates the installation process. The
- distribution files are compressed to reduce the number of
- distribution diskettes. A complete set is 7 files, PAYUS22A.ZIP
- through PAYUS22F.ZIP . A and B are the Slide Show, C through F are
- the working programs. INSTALL.EXE will control the decompression
- and placement of these files onto your Hard Disk.
-
- The remainder of this file is substantially correct, though disk and
- memory requirements have not been re-checked with the new release
- they are expected to be about the same. Check out file WHATSNEW.TXT
- on your hard disk \PAYPGMS directory for new features of this
- release (that file is printed out during the installation).
-
-
- RUNNING PAYROLL USA
- -------------------
-
- Once unpacked, whether manually or by the PAYUSINS or INSTALL
- programs, you can run the unpacked programs as follows:
-
- To see or print the Slide Show (which is a major part of the
- documentation):
-
- C:
- CD \PAYSLIDE
- RUNSLIDE
-
- To view or print the remaining Documentation:
-
- C:
- CD \PAYPGMS
- PRINTDOC { which can also be done from RUNSLIDE }
-
- To use the PAYROLL USA system:
-
- C:
- CD \PAYPGMS
- PAYUSA { which can also access the other two above }
-
-
- Technical Requirements
- ----------------------
-
- Memory
- ------
-
- PAYROLL USA needs 354178 bytes of FREE memory to run in. Use the
- DOS CHKDSK program to determine if you have enough. You should have
- enough on a 512K or 640K computer unless you use a lot of memory
- resident programs, virtual disk, disk cache, etc. On a 640K
- computer with no memory resident programs you should be able to
- handle up to 2000 employees, on a 512K computer up to 1000
- employees. There is a way of squeezing an extra 400 employees in,
- but it requires running individual programs direct from DOS instead
- of through the Menu so it is not recommended. The maximum employee
- count includes terminated employees which have to be retained until
- year end for the W-2, YTD totals, etc. It is also per employee
- file. If they are split between several files the maximum count
- could be much higher as only one employee file is processed at a
- time.
-
-
- Hard Disk
- ---------
-
- A hard disk is required to store the programs and will be most
- efficient (faster access, fewer size limitations than diskettes) to
- also store the Employee data. Each employee will use 11520 bytes
- (11.25K) of disk space TOTAL for both the input and the output data
- directories (\PAYIN and \PAYOUT). Both directories are on the same
- drive so, samples of disk space needed to store employees is
-
- Empl. Disk
- Count Space
-
- 10 113K
- 50 562K
- 100 1.1 MEG
- 250 2.75 MEG
- 500 5.5 MEG
- 1000 11 MEG
- 2000 22 MEG
-
- Irrespective of the number of employees add a megabyte to hold the
- programs, almost 2 meg if the slide show is retained (erase
- \PAYSLIDE when you are done with it IF you need the 720K it
- occupies). The programs and slide show do not need to be on the
- same drive as the Employee data. Example, programs and slide show
- on drive C, Employee data on either drive C or drive D is OK.
-
- Drive choice for data is selectable from the Configuration program.
-
-
- Using Diskettes for Employee Storage.
- ------------------------------------
-
- You should NOT use diskettes for data unless you know that the
- maximum number of employees (including terminated) is not likely to
- exceed 25 (if using regular 360K diskettes), or 50 (if using 720K
- IBM PS/2 3 1/2 inch diskettes), or about 80 if using 1.2 Meg
- diskettes (IBM AT high density).
-
- The only reason to consider using diskettes is if:
-
- a) your hard drive is already full
-
- b) others have access to your computer so you want to be able to
- physically remove confidential employee data and keep it (on the
- diskette) in a locked drawer. (We have a data encryption program
- for Registered Users that will in effect lock up the data on your
- hard disk).
-
- The Optional PAYROLL USA backup procedure will expect to read from
- one drive and write to the same or a different drive (which can be
- either hard disk or diskette). The input to the backup is not
- removable while the backup is in progress. Therefore, if you are
- using diskettes AND want to do the backup on the same diskette drive
- (i.e. if you only have one diskette drive) then reduce the above
- employee counts per diskette because the backups will occupy some of
- the space on the diskette.
-
- Drive choice for data is selectable from the Configuration program.
-
-
- Conclusion
- ----------
-
- Have fun trying PAYROLL USA but don't forget to Register with us if
- you like it. It is the best payroll system you are likely to see
- and you certainly will not beat the price for the features offered.
-
- Only $149.95 buys you Registration and 1st. years Tax Updates. Check
- out the competition in the $749.95 range (why pay $600.00 more), and
- remember that PAYROLL USA works with ANY accounting system AND can
- even export data to Lotus 123 and other "productivity systems" if
- additional reports, graphs, etc. are required. Last year, November
- thru February we were very busy handling new orders. The COMDEX
- computer trade show at Las Vegas is in mid November (which all our
- senior people MAY be exhibiting at in 1989 and later years), and we
- have to get the tax updates out to all existing Registered Users as
- soon as we get the new IRS Circular E in late December/early
- January. Makes it a very hectic period all round. So, mail in your
- check as soon as you have had a good look at PAYROLL USA. Avoid that
- year end rush and you will get faster service.

- CONSULTANTS
- -----------
-
- If you are a Consultant please make yourself known to us. We are
- looking at the potential in alternative marketplaces and have plans
- for a Consultants Version, probably mid 1990 or sometime in 1991,
- which would display your name, address and telephone number, on the
- title screen under a sidebar "Installed by ..... ". Pricing on that
- version would be different (substantially higher) to allow for extra
- promotional and advertising costs incurred by us, and to allow for
- your sales call, installation time, operator training, and initial
- "hand holding". We are after your existing clients who may need top
- quality in Payroll but are not computer hobbyists and would never
- think to look in the ShareWare marketplace. May also be suitable for
- your mainframe clients who have PC's, or for Executive Payroll, etc.
